Extreme Cincinnati Open weather: Why Jessica Pegula, Alexander Zverev & others had their matches suspended on Tuesday




The Cincinnati Open 2025 witnessed a series of match suspensions of top players that included Alexander Zverev and Jessica Pegula on Tuesday, August 12. Zverev was leading in the second set against the USA’s Brandon Nakashima, while on the other hand, Pegula had registered a stunning comeback in the second set after losing the first set in a tie breaker before the match was ultimately suspended.

Alexander Zverev was about to serve for the match while leading 5-4 in the second set when the tournament officials ordered the players to stop the match due to lightning. According to the official reports, bad weather was forecasted in Cincinnati, which included heavy lightning and rain until 10:30 p.m. local time after the suspension of the play.

The Cincinnati Open released an official statement regarding the suspension of play, which read:

"Due to the rain, there will be no further play this evening. A revised order of play for Wednesday will be released shortly."

Along with the suspension of matches in the men's and women's singles, two women's doubles matches were also suspended, which included Guo Hanyu and Alexandra Panova versus Demi Schuurs, Asia Muhammad & Peyton Stearns, and Marketa Vondrousova versus Timea Babos and Luisa Stefani.

Moreover, one highly anticipated match that was set for the night at the Cincinnati Open was between Ben Shelton and Roberto Bautista Agut, which was also postponed due to the extreme weather conditions.

The Cincinnati Open 2025 has been at the center of controversy after witnessing play disruptions amid the talks surrounding the massive $260 million campus renovation that was aimed at improving and enhancing the fan and player experience. On Monday, August 11, 2025, there was chaos around the center court due to which the play was suspended for a 'power outage.' It was reported that the power outage caused multiple on-court electronic systems to fail, which impacted the tournament.

The tournament released a statement that read:

“The loss of power impacted several systems used by the tournament and caused a delay of approximately one hour before play was able to resume with generator power.”

Wednesday, August 13, 2025, will feature an incredible line-up of matches, along with the completion of the matches that were suspended on Tuesday. American Frances Tiafoe will be competing against Holger Rune in round 4 on the P&G Center court, and the match is slated to begin at 11:00 am local time. This will be followed by the continuation of the match between Jessica Pegula and Magda Linette.

Some of the popular players who will be competing on Wednesday include Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton, and Madison Keys.
