Martina Navratilova suspects Donald Trump’s MAGA base behind shootings of Minnesota lawmakers Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman

Martina Navratilova suspected the involvement of Donald Trump’s MAGA (Make America Great Again) to be the reason for the shootings of Minnesota officials Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman on June 14, 2025. Minnesota State Representative Hortman and her husband, along with Democratic State lawmaker Hoffman and his wife, were all shot in what is being termed as a ‘politically motivated assassination’ (Via BBC).

As the news of this attack broke, Navratilova took notice and was soon to call out the Trump administration for this attack. However, the president claimed that the shootings appear to be a “targeted attack against state lawmakers,” adding that such ‘horrific violence will not be tolerated’ (via BBC).

The 18-time Grand Slam-winning former tennis pro took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to post about her doubts regarding the MAGA involvement in the incident. In one tweet, she wrote:

She was quick to share another post sharing details of the shootings and directly accused Trump of this incident.

"This is on trump…," she posted.

Martina Navratilova has always been very vocally against the president and his reforms. She often uses her social media accounts and other public platforms to scrutinise his acts and opinions as well as the faulty policies of his administration.

She recently called him out on the ongoing ICE detentions of illegal immigrants, focusing on some newly made amendments to the policy.

Martina Navratilova drew attention to how Donald Trump has been pushing his own beliefs underneath the deportation policy for illegal immigrants. In the recent ruling, the detention of immigrants by the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has seen a steep increase, with some of them not even being convicted of any crimes.

The retired tennis player shared an article by the New York Times on her X account, which stated that the ICE raids had stopped in places like the agricultural industry, hotels, and restaurants. She added a comment referring to Trump as 'orange man'.

"Orange man doesn’t want to hurt his base… so it’s not about illegal immigrants after all…," she wrote.

This policy was initially meant for arresting only immigrants with criminal records, but many non-criminals have also been wrongly arrested. However, the officials continue claiming that they have been strictly adhering to arresting 'criminals' and 'criminal illegal aliens'.
