In an interview with tennis MAGAZIN in December 2021, Zverev had this to say on his relationship with Thomalla:

"I think it’s always very important for tennis players to have the right person by their side. Sophia is someone who gives me peace and security. But ultimately, I am the decisive factor. Over the past 20 years, I have put an enormous amount of work into my tennis, especially together with my father."

"I have done everything to get to where I am today. But of course, you can see that, for the first time, there is a partner who accompanies me. I play extremely well with her support behind me, and I hope that will continue next year—maybe it will even get better. After all, I haven’t achieved all my goals yet."

Zverev also mentioned his father, Alexander Zverev Sr., who was a former tennis player for the Soviet Union. He has played a pivotal role in Zverev's life, having been his coach for the majority of his professional career.
