The German team has reached two finals this season, in Adelaide and Munich, but lost to the teams of Simone Bolelli/Andrea Vavassori and Andre Goransson/Sem Verbeek, respectively. At the Stuttgart Open, they began their campaign with a 6-4, 6-2 win over the Italian team of Matteo Arnaldi and Lorenzo Sonego in the first round.

On the other hand, this is the first time Rajeev Ram and Alex Michelsen have teamed up this season. Ram has played with multiple partners this year, with his best result being reaching the final of the ASB Classic with Christian Harrison. However, they had to give a walkover to the team of Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus. In the first round in Stuttgart, the American duo began with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) win over the German team of Yannick Hanfmann and Andreas Mies.
