“I don’t want to get ignored again” – Coco Gauff reveals why she refused to call her brother Codey after French Open win

Gauff witnessed a remarkable run at the French Open 2025, as she delivered an exceptional performance in the tournament. After defeating prominent players, such as Madison Keys, Lois Boisson, and more, the 21-year-old locked horns with Aryna Sabalenka in the finals. Gauff dominated the last round and clinched the victory against her opponent with a score of 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-4.

Shortly after this, she sat for a post-match press conference, where she revealed the reason behind not calling her brother Codey after the French Open win. Recalling the 2023 US Open incident, where her brother did not pick up her FaceTime after her victory, she said that she did not want to be ignored again. However, she revealed that she did call him later and he was ecstatic. (4:26 onwards)

"I actually thought about calling him when I was on the bench, but I was like, I don't want to get ignored again. Also, I remembered he had a game that day. I thought maybe he was on the field because I didn't know with the time difference and everything. I called him afterwards, and he was super hyped. He was texting me every day after each match. To have him be here for the ride is the best," said Coco Gauff.

"Obviously there’s a lot going on in our country right now with things … like, everything, yeah. I’m sure you guys know. But just to be able to be a representation of that and a representation of, I guess, people that look like me in America who maybe don’t feel as supported during this time period … just being that reflection of hope and light for those people," said Coco Gauff.

According to the ritual, Gauff was handed a celebratory champagne along with the trophy. Following this, she went out to celebrate her win and jokingly shared a note stating that going out after winning a tournament should be illegal.

Coco Gauff won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open 2023, where she bested Aryna Sabalenka with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. The 21-year-old became the first American to lift the US Open trophy after Serena Williams in 2015.
