Coco Gauff reminds Carlos Alcaraz of special memory with endearing message after Spaniard’s ‘amazing’ French Open triumph

Coco Gauff sent heartwarming congratulatory messages to Carlos Alcaraz after the Spaniard astonishingly came back from the brink of defeat to successfully defend his French Open title. In the messages, the newly-crowned women’s singles champion at Roland Garros remembered a happy memory with the Spaniard in Beijing from last year.

While participating at the 2024 China Open, Gauff and Alcaraz went on a sightseeing trip to Forbidden City, a historic imperial palace in Beijing. The pair also sported traditional attire and posed for photos together. They would eventually go on to win the women’s and men’s singles titles at the tournament. In the finals, Gauff defeated Karolina Muchova, while Alcaraz came out on top against Sinner.

On Sunday, June 8, after Carlos Alcaraz’s stellar comeback win over the Italian in the men’s singles final at Roland Garros, Coco Gauff took to her Instagram Stories and posted a picture of the Spaniard posing with La Coupe des Mousquetaires (The Musketeers’ Trophy). The 21-year-old captioned the post:

After their respective title triumphs in Beijing last year, Gauff suggested that her sightseeing trip with Alcaraz to the Forbidden City brought the pair luck at the 2024 China Open.

While delivering the winner's speech after an emphatic win over Karolina Muchova in the women's singles final of the 2024 China Open, Coco Gauff candidly recalled her and Carlos Alcaraz's collective experience exploring Beijing's Forbidden City. Gauff said:

"Carlos and I both went to the Forbidden City earlier this week. Someone in press asked me if it was gonna bring luck. I was like I don’t know I don’t want to jinx it. Then Carlos won. At that time it was only Round of 16 for me. But I guess the Imperial Palace brought us luck."

Gauff's success in Paris made her the first American to win the women's singles title at the clay Major since her idol Serena Williams did it in 2015. Meanwhile, Alcaraz's back-to-back Roland Garros titles suggest that he is very much the player to beat on the red dirt in men's tennis.
