De’Aaron Fox makes major announcement signaling long term intent with Spurs

De’Aaron Fox appears committed to a long-term future with the San Antonio Spurs. Earlier this season, Fox was traded from the Sacramento Kings after seven and a half seasons, a move that caught many off guard, given his role as a core player.

Despite playing just 17 games before injuring his pinky finger. Fox appeared to enjoy his time in San Antonio. He will be entering the final year of his rookie contract next season and is expecting to get paid $37.09 million.

He is also reportedly now eligible for a four-year extension worth $228.6 million. However, it will all depend on San Antonio’s front office whether to offer it or not. He is expected to play a full season next year and hopes to secure the extension this offseason.

"I would definitely hope so," Fox said when asked his optimism about signing an extension this summer.

If the Spurs ultimately decide to extend De'Aaron Fox's contract, the 2026-27 season would start at $51 million.

De'Aaron Fox provides update on injury

Since getting traded to the San Antonio Spurs before the trade deadline, De'Aaron Fox has played 17 games. Averaging 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals. The Spurs also went 6-11 with him in the lineup.

Fox's brief stint with the Spurs didn't meet expectations, but he had little time to adjust and build chemistry with his new teammates. Then his season was cut short by a pinky injury, leading to a season-ending surgery.

Some fans are concerned about Fox's availability and whether he can play fully healthy next season.

"I'm doing well," said Fox. "I've been cleared, so I played a little five-on-five, and I've done contact stuff, so I'll be ready for next year."

After the Spurs players' summer break, Fox and his new teammates will have the opportunity to work on their chemistry during the summer camp. If he and Victor Wembanyama figure out a way to become a lethal duo, San Antonio could be a bigger threat in the Western Conference next season.
