NBA Trade Rumors: Heat eyeing to dangle 6’7″ forward’s $19M expiring contract in pursuit of superstar

The Miami Heat are looking to trade veteran shooter Duncan Robinson this summer, Forbes NBA contributor Evan Sidery reported on Friday. Robinson is entering the final year of his five-year, $90 million contract, with $19.8 million set to expire.

Miami has no interest in keeping Robinson. Last season, the 6-foot-7 shooter put up 11.0 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 74 games. Robinson has proven to be a productive role player and a threat from downtown. He shot 39.3 percent of his 3-pointers last year.

Robinson is guaranteed to earn $9.8 million from his deal. That means Miami or any team that would trade for him would save $10 million if he’s waived by July 8.

According to Sidery, Robinson's contract can also help the South Beach team if they are looking to pursue a superstar.

In April, Bleacher Report's Andy Bailey suggested that the Heat use Robinson and his contract to land a star player. Bailey's trade idea featured the sharpshooting wing, Andrew Wiggins, a 2029 first-round pick and a 2031 first-round pick for Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns.

"Miami really does have what looks like a ready-made KD trade package with Andrew Wiggins' deal (which could be re-routed elsewhere, if Phoenix wants to further the teardown), Duncan Robinson's expiring contract and multiple first-round picks," Bailey wrote.

Durant was linked to multiple teams during the trade deadline. One of the teams was Miami, a team that had just traded away its best player, Jimmy Butler.

Adding KD to play with Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo could create a star trio and transform the team into contenders.

Former Heat players believe the team will be aggressive over the summer

The situation with the Miami Heat changed after they traded Jimmy Butler during the middle of the season. Without a star player, Miami wasn't the same competitive team. The franchise's former players believe the front office (specifically Pat Riley) will be aggressive this summer.

Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem shared their thoughts on the situation on Wednesday's episode of "The OGs Show."

“What I would say just from knowing Coach Riley the way we know him, is he’s going to be very, very aggressive and be in conversations everywhere,” Miller said. “I don’t think they come back as the same situation.”

“I think the conversation he had with the media at the end of the year is that he didn’t think running it back was the thing to do," Haslem added. "So, I’ve got to believe he’s hunting for a whale.”

The Heat haven't revealed their plans for the offseason. However, there have been a few star players linked to the organization.
